Your Questions

There's a wide range of vitamins and supplements available for many different health concerns. Sometimes so much choice can be confusing! Below is a list of some of the most frequently asked questions by our customers about taking vitamins and supplements.

When is the best time to take my multi vitamin?

Multi vitamins are best taken with food for better absorption and utilisation by your body. As the B complex vitamins are used by the body to convert food into energy, and we need energy to enjoy our day, we recommend that you take your multi with your breakfast.

I’m tired all the time, what can I take to perk me up?

Firstly it is best to rule out any underlying pathology, so see your local doctor for a check up. In the absence of any underlying problems, there are several things that you can do: Firstly you should take a strong multi vitamin, such as Super Strength Multicare, one per day with your breakfast. If you still think that you need some help consider Get Up and Go or Korean Ginseng.

What is the difference between Herbal Fat Metaboliser and Rapid Fat Burner?

Herbal Fat Metaboliser is formulated to assist with the distribution and assimilation of fats in the digestive system and to support normal healthy gall bladder, digestive and liver function. Rapid Fat Burner contains ingredients to assist with weight loss by helping to reduce appetite and sugar cravings, it also helps to maintain nutritional requirements during dieting, as well as supporting energy and stamina levels during activity. Both products can be used simultaneously, in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise program to support healthy weight loss and liver function.

What is the difference between Ginkgo Biloba 750, Ginkgo 2000 and Brain and Memory Boost?

The herb ginkgo biloba is used to help with circulation to the hands and feet, as well as circulation to the head area, which assists with memory and concentration. The dose needed for memory and concentration is six grams per day, you can get this from either three Ginkgo 2000 tablets, or two Brain and Memory Boost tablets. Brain and Memory Boost also contains the herb bacopa monnieri (brahmi), which in addition to being useful for memory, may also help to alleviate nervous tension and anxiety, which may often accompany the demand to absorb and retain information. If you want to use ginkgo for circulation to your hands and feet only, try the Ginkgo biloba 750, three capsules daily. So as you can see, it all depends on what your aim is!

What is the best way to take Echinacea 2000 plus Andrographis for my cold?

When you have an acute cold, take three tablets daily until your symptoms subside.

I separate my tablets into a pill box to make it easier to remember what to take, but the Flexicare tablet cracks after a while. Why is this?

Chondroitin, one of the ingredients in Flexicare is a hygroscopic substance, which means it naturally absorbs water from its surroundings. This is partially why it is so useful for helping to lubricate arthritic joints. When left out of a sealed container however, the chondroitin attracts moisture to the surface of the tablet, causing the tablet to slowly swell over time. The swelling then causes the outer coating of the tablet to crack.

We recommend that you keep your supplements in their original containers whenever possible to ensure they remain air tight and in a stable condition for the duration of their shelf life. If you do need to transfer them, please ensure they are kept in a sealed air-tight container, and transfer them for the shortest time possible.

Caltrate® has now been taken off the pharmaceutical benefits scheme (PBS), making it more expensive. Do you have an alternative at Australian Natural Care Products?

Yes, we have a product called Healthy Bones, which contains calcium citrate and hydroxyapatite, providing 264mg calcium per tablet. In addition to the calcium we also include Magnesium, Vitamin D, Manganese and Boron, which are essential vitamins and minerals for the absorption of calcium into your bones. Zinc, Copper, and Manganese are essential for bone formation and growth, while Magnesium is important for the maintenance of strong bones. Boron and Vitamin D help the body to utilise calcium, and maintain calcium stores. Having all of these important mineral and nutrient co-factors in your calcium supplement means that it can be more effective for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

I have been taking fish oils for a while now, and I’m thinking of having a change and taking cod liver oil. Will this give me the same benefits?

While fish oil and cod liver oil are both beneficial for health, they don’t actually provide equivalent benefits. Fish Oil, made from the flesh of oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, is high in the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These nutrients have an anti-inflammatory action in the body, making them beneficial for relief of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, as well as helping to support cardiovascular wellbeing through promoting healthy triglyceride levels, blood vessels and heart function.

Cod Liver oil on the other hand, is made from the liver of the cod fish, and is rich in vitamin A and D, but contains very little omega 3 fatty acids. Vitamin A is involved in the maintenance of healthy skin and epithelial tissues of the digestive and respiratory mucous membranes, and provides nutritional support for a healthy immune system. Vitamin D assists with the absorption and utilisation of calcium from the digestive tract, which helps with the maintenance and development of healthy, strong bones and teeth. Together, these fat-soluble vitamins help to provide nutritional support for healthy bones, teeth, skin and mucous membranes, and assist with healthy eye and immune system function.

As you can see, these two oils are quite different, and the use of one or the other depends on what health benefits you would like to achieve. Please call our Naturopathic helpline on 1300 365 020 if you need further advice on which one is right for you.

I am a 55-year-old woman and take no medications. Can you recommend a good supplement regime to maintain general health?

The basis of any health maintenance program should include a good multi vitamin. I suggest the Women's Ultra Multi, which is formulated to provide the necessary ingredients to deal with the stresses and nutritional shortfalls that women experience in today's hectic lifestyle. Omega 3 essential fatty acids, such as fish oil are also an essential component of any supplement program. Fish oil is beneficial for maintaining healthy cholesterol levels, supporting healthy heart function and for general wellbeing. With bone density levels dropping steadily after menopause, supplementing with calcium is important. Healthy Bones Osteo-Support contains calcium plus minerals and nutrient co-factors to support optimum bone strength. Last but not least I suggest Get Up & Go CoQ10 50mg for its benefits in heart health, energy production and for free radical protection as an antioxidant. Levels of coQ10 decline as we age, so supplementing with coQ10 is highly recommended.
