While fish oil and cod liver oil are both beneficial for health, they don’t actually provide equivalent benefits. Fish Oil, made from the flesh of oily fish such as salmon and mackerel, is high in the omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. These nutrients have an anti-inflammatory action in the body, making them beneficial for relief of inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, as well as helping to support cardiovascular wellbeing through promoting healthy triglyceride levels, blood vessels and heart function.
Cod Liver oil on the other hand, is made from the liver of the cod fish, and is rich in vitamin A and D, but contains very little omega 3 fatty acids. Vitamin A is involved in the maintenance of healthy skin and epithelial tissues of the digestive and respiratory mucous membranes, and provides nutritional support for a healthy immune system. Vitamin D assists with the absorption and utilisation of calcium from the digestive tract, which helps with the maintenance and development of healthy, strong bones and teeth. Together, these fat-soluble vitamins help to provide nutritional support for healthy bones, teeth, skin and mucous membranes, and assist with healthy eye and immune system function.
As you can see, these two oils are quite different, and the use of one or the other depends on what health benefits you would like to achieve. Please call our Naturopathic helpline on 1300 365 020 if you need further advice on which one is right for you.
